Why Is My Tap Dripping? Safe Checks Before a Repair
Identify where a tap leaks, collect the right information and decide when a plumber should handle the repair.

A tap that keeps dripping after it is closed deserves attention. First establish where the water is coming from: the spout, around the handle, the base of the tap or the pipework underneath. These observations are more useful than guessing which part has failed.
Look closely without taking it apart
Close the tap normally, without overtightening it. Wipe the surrounding surface dry, then watch where fresh water appears. Check the accessible cupboard below for dampness, using a torch if necessary. Do not reach near wet electrical fittings or move a connected appliance to investigate.
Note whether the leak happens only when the tap runs or continues when it is off. A short video can show an intermittent problem more clearly than a still photograph. If the tap is a mixer, record whether the issue follows use of hot water, cold water or both.
Understand why parts vary
WaterSafe identifies worn washers, faulty cartridges and limescale among common causes of dripping taps. The appropriate repair depends on the tap’s design. A replacement washer is not the answer for every model.
Look for the brand or model in your purchase paperwork before ordering parts. Photograph the whole tap and any accessible label. Keep the original installation instructions if you have them; these can help the plumber identify compatible components.
Before any dismantling, the relevant water supply must be isolated and checked. If you cannot identify or operate the correct isolation valve, leave the tap assembled and arrange professional help. Do not force corroded fittings or improvise a repair on unfamiliar plumbing.
Decide how urgently to get help
A contained drip into an otherwise draining basin is different from water spreading inside a cupboard. Arrange a repair for either, but seek urgent help if water is escaping onto the floor, reaching electrics or cannot be contained safely.
When booking, ask whether the plumber can assess repair and replacement options before ordering anything. Mention restricted access, unusual finishes and whether the tap is still under a manufacturer’s warranty. Do not assume a complete replacement is necessary before the fault has been assessed.
If you rent, report the problem to your landlord or managing agent. Otherwise, find a local plumber or browse businesses offering tap and toilet services. Share the details you have gathered.
