Plumber Quote Checklist: What to Ask Before Work Starts

Compare plumbing quotes on scope, materials, exclusions and charging terms so that the lowest headline price does not hide a different job.

Two plumbing quotes can look very different because they cover different work. Before comparing totals, give each business the same description of the fault or project, along with useful photographs, measurements and access details.

Make the scope specific

Ask the quote to identify the fittings being repaired or replaced and the work around them. For example, a new basin tap may involve access beneath the basin, replacement connectors or a separate waste fitting. Do not assume these are included.

For a bathroom job, name the products where possible and clarify who supplies them. Agree what happens if a customer-supplied item is unsuitable or arrives late. Keep product links and model numbers with the quote so there is one clear reference.

WaterSafe’s planning advice highlights exclusions such as boxing-in and redecorating. Ask who will make good disturbed walls, flooring and finishes, and who will remove waste.

Compare the full charging basis

Your checklist should cover:

  • Whether the document is a quote or an estimate.
  • Labour, parts and any attendance or diagnostic charge.
  • Whether VAT applies and is included in the total.
  • How long the price remains valid.
  • Payment stages and what each stage covers.
  • How additional work will be explained and approved.

Citizens Advice distinguishes an agreed-price quote from an estimate and recommends written quotes for comparison. Its page includes country-specific advice. If something cannot be priced until a fault is exposed, ask what the investigation costs and when you will receive the next price.

Agree access, timing and completion

Record expected start and finish dates for a larger job, likely water shut-offs and anything you need to clear beforehand. Ask what testing and handover information will be supplied, and what any workmanship guarantee actually covers.

For an emergency call-out, focus first on making the situation safe. Ask whether the visit covers a temporary repair, a full repair or diagnosis only. Do not assume an initial attendance payment settles the entire job.

You can find local plumbers and send each the same brief. Compare the explanation and scope alongside the price, and resolve unclear points before agreeing to proceed.
